Most know Germany struggled with two authoritarian regimes in the 20th Century: Hitler’s Nazis and the GDR Communists. The Lappe family was one a handful that resisted both and thus got themselves in a bit of trouble. Though today Christian Lappe is a sought after restorer of rare German automobiles in the United States, the first half of his life was defined by arrests, interogations, tragedy and faith. Mr. Lappe shares not only his own story In the Corner Back By the Woodpile but that of his siblings, parents and his countrymen. Plus, Mr. Lappe proves that some struggles do have happy endings, proudly showing off his workshop’s achievement.
