Super Bowl 2020 has come and gone and we have to say the decade seems to be starting off right. The game itself was good (how ’bout dem Chiefs?!) and the ads were reasonably good as well. Good enough, in fact, that we included a few more that were worth mentioning. Without further ado, here are the top five most hilarious commercials of the big game in 2020.
Never have we wanted to get behind the wheel of a Porsche more than after watching this commercial!
If you’re like us and your inner child refuses to grow up (or your name is Elon Musk), you can’t help but love Rick and Morty. Fans were happily surprised to see their heroes in a mini-episode of the white-hot Adult Swim cartoon. The faceless Morty robots chomping down Pringles snacks was an awesome retro-futuristic nod to the antagonists in West World and the faceless fembots chasing down Lindsay Wagner in the Bionic Woman, as well as a potential dig at the Internet of Things.
We’ve come to expect nothing less from the makers of Mountain Dew than wacky, zany, off-the-wall. Back in the day, the Velvet Frog himself, Mel Torme, would parachute into any scenario before singing, “Do the Dew!” Fast forward 20 years, and now it’s Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston doing his best Shining impression in order to get the mom from Blackish to try Mountain Dew Zero. Hilarity at last ensues with Cranston appearing as the creepy twin girls.
This is a fun romp through a beautifully-crafted building. The chase allows the Hard Rock to demonstrate every feature in their hotel and casino while being comically relevant to the overall theme. Showcasing one half of the halftime musical act was strategic in several ways. The first, is in highlighting music, which is the main attraction of this particular hotel. The second strategy was the incorporation and inclusion of much of the multicultural talent the world has to offer, reminders of said culture’s musical contribution. The third was the acknowledgment of the cultural and historical significance of J-Lo and Shakira as halftime performers—and all of this done in the tongue-in-cheek nature of most of the commercials airing during the Super Bowl.
OG hip-hop hitmaker, MC Hammer, has another Super Bowl advertising hit as well, this time with Cheetos. The advertisement, which focused on the cheesy snack brand’s new popcorn product, riffed on the age-old issue that comes with eating Cheetos: your fingers become un-usable. MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” has never been so relevant.
The Patriots may have missed out on the Super Bowl this year, but at least New England fans have Hyundai’s commercial for the Sonata’s new smart parking tech to cheer them up. Featuring Beantown natives Chris Evans, Rachel Dratch (remember that hilarious “Boston Teens” bit on Saturday Night Live) and John Krasinski arguing in their thickest New England accents over whether Krasinski’s Sonata can fit in a wicked tight parking spot — don’t worry, he’s got “smaht park” — the 80-second ad is a dream come true for Bostonians. Red Sox legend David “Big Papi” Ortiz making a cameo is just the cherry on top.
Jason Momoa jokingly revealed his true self by stripping down his luscious locks and removing the highlights of his muscular frame. In the Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans Super Bowl spot, the Aquaman star jokes that “home is where I can be myself,” as video editing magic makes the usually hunky actor appear extremely lean and balding. Stripped down to his “natural” shape, Momoa tries to bench press with no additional weighted plates. “Good job,” his real-life wife Lisa Bonet tells him.
Since the Big Game falls on Groundhog Day 2020, it’s no surprise one brand took the liberty of referencing the iconic 1993 film Groundhog Day. The Jeep commercial, which first aired on Sunday before the 2020 Super Bowl, shows the movie’s star Bill Murray reliving the same day over and over again. Murray drives around in a Jeep with Punxsutawney Phil in tow, waking up to Sonny & Cher’s song “I Got You Babe” daily. It’s Murray’s first time starring in a national commercial, according to Rolling Stone. This time around, in contrast from his movie character, it seems Murray learned his lesson and didn’t “drive angry,” as one of the best known Groundhog Day movie quotes goes.
