Miley Cyrus’ New Album for Free After MTV Video Awards [Review]

With outfits beyond barely there on just about every female performer except Taylor Swift, SNL-style skits to make you LOL, an outrageous rant by Kanye announcing his drug use and eventual presidential run and Justin Bieber crying onstage, this year’s Video Music Awards were already bound for one of the most memorable. But Cyrus fans got a little extra at the very end of the show. The host of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards closed out the ceremony by announcing that she was surprise-releasing a new album as Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz for free online, after performing new music from it as she closed out the show. It’s not downloadable, but the album is available to listen in its entirety via SoundCloud. The opening track, “Dooo It!,” has an intro which offers a confidence-shaking “oh shit” moment, as if, in an effort to be artistic, Miley lost sight of her own artistry. However, it recovers nicely into a trippy tune which could very well be a minor hit for Cyrus, if not her dead petz. She then faithfully returns to the pop genre and her primarily female audience with tracks like “Karen Don’t Be Sad” and “Space Boots.” Songs which could prove to be hits with an accompanying mega-video. Then we have songs like “Fuckin’ Fucked Up” and “BB Talk” the latter of which is more or less biographical monologue, only Miley’s voice is so deep, it’s almost more appropriate if the listener imagines Justin Bieber giving a gay confessional. In spite of this, BB Talk just might be a sleeper hit due to it’s raw honesty and lyrical hook “fuck me so you stop baby talking.” The collaborative track, “Slab of Butter,” featuring Sarah Barthel of Phantogram is actually a damn good piece of music which seems the most musically-focused and gratefully free of self-absorption. If you like your steak served funky, raw and peppered with a lot of F-bombs, then this is the album for you. Thanks to the nod to outer space on at least 4 tracks, it’s even got a side of twice-baked potatoes. Or, maybe that’s half-baked. Go to MileyCyrusandHerDeadPetz.com to hear it for yourself.
